My neighbor warned me about using a drill on old plaster

He said 'you'll hit a key and the whole wall will come down' while I was hanging a shelf. I thought he was just being careful. The drill bit went in, there was a crunch, and a three-foot section of wall just fell off in one sheet. It took me a weekend and about $200 in materials to fix it. Anyone have a better method for finding the lath in these old houses?

Oh man, that's brutal. I mean, your neighbor literally called it and it still happened. That repair job sounds like a huge pain to deal with.
