I don't get the hype about those expensive cable management trays
Last week I mounted a $7 plastic gutter from Home Depot under my desk instead of a $50 cable tray. It holds all my power strips and cables just fine, and nobody sees it anyway. Am I missing something or is the fancy stuff just for looks?
You said "it holds all my power strips and cables just fine" and that's really the thing... the expensive trays are usually made of metal so they don't sag over time, especially if you have heavy bricks or surge protectors. But if your plastic gutter isn't bowing after a few months, you're probably fine. The other angle is dust... those open metal trays collect way less dust than a plastic gutter with ridges and corners, so if you hate cleaning under your desk, the fancy stuff might actually save you time in the long run.
