Warning: My $200 noise cancelling headphones almost ruined my work week in Lisbon

I bought a pair of those fancy headphones before I left, thinking they'd be perfect for working in cafes and airports. Last week in Lisbon, I was deep in a project at a busy spot near Rossio Square, completely zoned in. I didn't hear my phone ring, my partner trying to get my attention, or even the cafe worker telling me they were closing. My partner had to come find me because I missed three calls about a change to our evening plans. The headphones worked too well. I felt really cut off and it caused some stress. Now I'm thinking about just using regular earbuds with one ear free. Has anyone else found that total silence backfires when you're trying to stay aware of your surroundings?

Transparency mode is a total game changer for that! I just leave it on all the time now so I can hear my coffee order being called.

Yeah, that's the downside of good noise cancelling... you get too locked in. I've missed important stuff in public places before too. Maybe try the transparency mode if your headphones have it.
