Three hours into a co-working space in Medellin and my laptop battery died
I found out the hard way that the outlet voltage here is different than what my charger is rated for. Rushed to a local tech shop and spent 45 minutes trying to explain the problem in my broken Spanish. Turns out I just needed a simple adapter, not a whole new charger. Has anyone else had gear fail on them in a new country because of power differences?

Guess the coffee wasn't the only thing that got a surprise adjustment. My first trip to Japan, I blew out a power strip and a hair dryer in one glorious pop before realizing 100 volts means business. Spent the rest of the trip smelling like burnt plastic and defeat. Adapters are sneaky little liars too, they fit one way but don't always fix the power. Now I just pack a universal brick and pray it doesn't decide to become a space heater. Live and learn, or in your case, live and fry an outlet.

Oh man, that's such a classic travel trap! I've noticed this pattern where we assume basics like power are universal, but really everything adjusts when you cross borders. It's like how coffee tastes different in every country - you'd think a cup of joe is simple, but it always surprises you.
