Fellow artist told me my layer merging method was slowing me down for months
I always merged layers as I went, like flattened everything down to keep it clean. A guy in a Discord for clip studio said I was making it impossible to fix mistakes later without redoing stuff. I ignored him for like 4 months because I thought my way was faster. Finally tried keeping layers separate on a portrait commission last week and it saved me from having to redraw the whole face after I messed up the shading. Has anyone else had to eat crow about a workflow habit?

Oh yeah I used to flatten everything like I was making pancakes and wondering why my shading always looked weird. Figured out separate layers exist for a reason after crying over a ruined eye for two hours.

I read a tutorial once that said you should name your layers too, not just separate them. Something about how your brain remembers "hair base" better than "Layer 17 copy 4." I started doing that and it cut my redo time in half. Still flatten at the end for the file size though, just not during the actual work.
