Got hit with a $12 shipping fee on a $30 order, so I tried the chat thing

Placed an order on a Thursday for some dog food and the checkout tacked on $12 shipping, which felt nuts for a $30 cart. I opened the live chat and just asked if there was any way to get that down, and the rep dropped it to free in about two minutes. Turns out all I had to do was ask, and now I do it every single time before I hit pay. Then last week the same store emailed me a 15% code I never signed up for, just for having the chat open. Does asking in chat actually work for you guys, or did I just get lucky with a nice rep?
