Pro tip: don't pay $60 for a "mall history tour" at the dying Galleria in Arlington Heights
So last month I drove out to Arlington Heights to check out the Galleria before it closes for good, and I made the mistake of paying $60 for a so called guided history tour that a guy was running out of the old food court. I figured it would be worth it since he claimed he had 20 years of stories from working there. Turns out the whole tour was just him walking us past empty stores and pointing at things that were already gone, like the old arcade that got cleared out in 2019. He spent 15 minutes talking about a pretzel stand that no longer exists and kept saying the same three stories over and over. The only cool part was the hallway behind the Sears where there is still original tile from 1978, and I could have found that on my own for free. I got maybe 40 minutes of actual info for 60 bucks, which works out to a buck and a half a minute, and half of it was wrong about which stores used to be where. Has anyone else run into these paid tour guys at dead malls, and did you actually learn anything or did you get burned like I did?
