Showerthought: I made myself pick between a pun and a one liner for my daughter's birthday toast

So my daughter turned 13 last Saturday and I got asked to give a little toast at her party with about 20 people there, and I had two jokes ready. Option one was the classic "you're growing up so fast, I remember when you were just a twinkle in my eye, and now you're a twinkle in my wallet" and option two was a pun about her being a teenager, like "welcome to the years where you'll slam doors, and I'll just be door-mat about it." I went with the wallet one because my wife said the pun was too much of a reach, and I have to admit she was right, the room groaned in the good way, my brother in law actually clapped. But here's the thing, the pun might have landed harder with the teens at the table, my nephew laughed before I even finished it, which makes me wonder if I picked wrong. The wallet joke got a solid 7 out of 10 on the groan scale, but I keep replaying the pun in my head thinking it could have been an 8. Do you all go with the safe joke or the risky pun when you only get one shot at a toast?
