TIL my constant security hardware swaps are just feeding the e-waste monster.
It's frustrating how chasing the latest secure gear means tossing out perfectly good stuff that piles up.

But is the security risk from using older hardware really that bad? Like I've kept some of my stuff for years past the "recommended" swap date and never had a problem. Sometimes it feels like companies just want to sell more gear by scaring people about outdated tech.

Yeah that line about "tossing out perfectly good stuff" hits hard. I've got a drawer full of old routers and key fobs that are probably fine, but the company says swap them every two years for security updates. Feels bad just adding to that pile of plastic and circuits lol. The guilt is real when you're just trying to stay safe but see the physical cost.

Honestly the whole two year cycle feels like a made up rule. My old work laptop ran for five years on basic updates with no security issues. The risk gets way overblown to sell new hardware.
