My bank account got hit with fraud 4 years ago and I still check every transaction twice
Back in 2021 someone got my card info from a sketchy gas station pump in Oklahoma and drained $340 before I caught it. Now I use a dedicated credit card for gas and online orders with alerts set to ping me for anything over $1. Does anyone else have a specific routine or tool they trust for catching small fraudulent charges fast?

johnson.lee makes a good point about the separate account trick, but I wonder if we might be overthinking this. I had my card compromised back in 2019 from a gas station in Tulsa, only lost about $85 before the bank flagged it. The bank called me the next morning, issued a new card, and refunded the money in 48 hours. I just use the same credit card for everything now with text alerts set to $50 and up. I check my statement once a month when it comes in, and that's been enough for me. Maybe I got lucky with a good bank, but I see a lot of folks online acting like identity theft is coming for them next week when really the fraud protection systems are pretty solid these days.

That gas station pump story hits close to home. Mine was a coffee shop in Austin where the guy skimmed my card and then tried to buy $600 worth of fishing gear at a Walmart an hour away. Now I keep a separate checking account with like $200 in it for any sketchy transactions, and I use a prepaid card for gas entirely. Feels like a hassle but the peace of mind is worth it. Once you get burned, you never trust that tap-to-pay button the same way again.
