The prompt 'write a letter you'll never send' broke me open at 2am
So three nights ago I pulled that prompt from a random generator and wrote a letter to my dad who passed in 2019, and I ended up filling four pages front and back. I never planned to write it down at all, I was just gonna do a short one in my head, but my hand kept going and the thing turned into something way longer than I expected. The weird part is the letter answered a question I had been stuck on for a novel draft since January, and the answer was sitting in the part I almost cut. Now I am wondering if I should write more of these on purpose or if that would kill whatever made this one work. Does anyone here keep a stack of unsent letters as a warm up, or do you just burn em after?
Write em and keep em. The second you write one on purpose as a warm up it turns into a chore and the good stuff stops coming. Let the stack grow, then maybe reread em in a year and see what your brain was hiding.
