Heard a kid at the library say 'the monster was just lonely' about a picture book

I was waiting to pick up a book and this little girl, maybe five, said it to her dad about a dragon. Made me think about flipping any villain's motive. What's a simple prompt you've heard that flipped a whole story for you?

Honestly, that kid nailed it. I read a book once where the "bad guy" was just trying to save his own town from ruin. It changed everything. Now I always wonder what the villain's side of the story would sound like. Makes you feel bad for rooting against them sometimes.

Kids have a way of cutting right to the heart of things, don't they? I remember watching a cartoon where the evil wizard just wanted his stolen spellbook back. The heroes were basically glorified thieves. It's funny how often the big bad is just someone who had a really bad day and never got their stuff returned.

Read a comic where the villain was just a dad trying to get his kid the last toy on the shelf. Taylorcarr's right, it makes you rethink who the real bad guy is.
