That old timer who swore by greasing the cable every 3 lifts was right after all

I was on a job at the Port of Savannah last month and this guy named Walt kept telling me to stop the boom every 3 lifts to hand-grease the cable drum. I thought he was just being a grandpa who didnt trust modern tech. Then I ignored him for 12 lifts and my cable started chirping like a hurt bird in the sheave. Walt just walked over and pointed at the warning tag and said "told ya." Has anyone else run into a veteran operator with a weird habit that turned out to save your gear?

Man that's exactly how it goes with old Walt types every time. Had a guy named Sal on a job in Newark who insisted on tapping the hydraulic fitting with a wrench before every shift, turns out he was detecting micro-cracks before they blew out.

Hang on though, that Newark story doesn't quite track with how the crack detection works for hydraulics. Tapping a fitting with a wrench is more about feeling for loose connections or checking for wear on the threads, not micro-cracks in the metal itself. Those tiny cracks usually need a magnifying glass or dye penetrant to spot before they fail. Sal might have had good instincts but the physics is a bit off.
