Rant: Safety guy told me I was "over-rigging" a 5 ton pick last week

I was setting up for a lift at a job site near the port in Savannah, a concrete wall panel around 5 tons. This safety coordinator walks by, says I'm using too many slings and wasting time. I told him I'd rather spend 10 extra minutes rigging than have a load shift. Has anyone else run into people who don't get that caution beats speed?

Ngl, that safety guy sounds like he was more worried about his schedule than your back or worse, the guy under the load. It's a bigger pattern you see everywhere now, people rushing through small things and calling it "efficiency" when really they're just cutting corners that can lead to big problems later. I see this all the time with folks at grocery stores squeezing past each other without a word or drivers not checking blind spots because they're in a hurry. Caution doesn't just protect you from falling loads, it protects everyone around you from the stupid mistakes that come with speed. You did right by taking that extra time, and that coordinator needs to learn that a few minutes of patience beats a lifetime of regret.

Read a piece the other day about how 70% of workplace incidents come from people rushing to meet deadlines that don't actually matter. The guy in the lift truck was just following the script they wrote for him. You see this everywhere now. People treat safety like it's optional extra time instead of the main thing. That coordinator probably thinks he's being efficient but he's just teaching bad habits that get people hurt. Caution is cheap. Regret is expensive.
