Finally stopped ignoring the load cell data, saved a 20k headache

Been running the same 100 ton Link-Belt for 8 years and always trusted my gut on pick weights. Last month we had a job in Tulsa moving precast panels, nothing crazy, maybe 12k each. Foreman kept nagging me to check the load cell readout on every lift. Honestly thought it was just paperwork nonsense. Third panel in, the screen showed 16.8k. I about had a heart attack. Went back and weighed one at the yard, turns out the concrete mix was denser than spec, every panel was running 40% over. My gut said it was fine, but the numbers didnt lie. Now I check the readout on every single pick, even the small stuff. Has anyone else caught something big that way, or am I the only stubborn one?

Buddy of mine runs a small crane outfit and had the same thing happen with a rental unit. He was moving HVAC units off a roof and the readout kept flagging one at 30% over what the sticker said. Turned out someone had swapped the rooftop unit for a heavier model without telling him, and his gut would have flown it anyway. Numbers saved him from a nasty drop that day.
