Pro tip: watch your client's head position for curly cuts
Last month in Austin I had a client who kept tilting her chin down while I was dry cutting her curls, and I kept chasing the same section. After 3 tries I finally asked her to look straight at the mirror and hold still, and the whole shape fell into place. Now I check posture before I even pick up my shears, especially for anyone with thicker hair or a shorter neck. Has anyone else run into the mirror tilt problem with certain chairs or salon stations?
Have you ever noticed how much the chair itself messes with their posture before you even start? I used to roll my eyes at the old stylists who fussed about head tilt, figured cutting curl by curl would just even out in the end. Then I spent a whole appointment fighting a section that would not sit right, and it hit me, every pass was landing at a slightly different angle because her chin kept dropping. Once I started asking folks to look dead at the mirror and stay put, the shape finally made sense and I stopped trimming the same spot five times. Now I stand behind them and check that tilt before my shears even come out, it saves me so much guessing.
My buddy had a lady who kept sliding down in the chair the whole time. He'd fix her tilt, turn around for his comb, and she was right back to chin on chest. Drove him nuts for like three appointments straight. Turned out the chair was just too tall for her and her feet never touched the ground, so she was slowly scootching the whole time. He threw a phone book under her feet and the problem went away.
