I had to choose between a $50 thermal protector spray or a $15 leave-in conditioner for a major color correction. Went with the spray, and it saved the hair.

Hold up, I gotta disagree completely. That spray worked great for me on my patio furniture. You have to apply it evenly and let it dry fully, which a lot of people skip. Honestly, it kept the water beading up for a whole season. Maybe you got a bad batch or used it on a surface it doesn't work with. Tbh, calling it a total waste seems a bit extreme.
