I still prefer paper takeoff sheets over my tablet for bids
Everyone in my office pushed me to go fully digital with our estimating software, and I tried it for 3 weeks on a 40-unit apartment job in Austin. But I kept missing small details in the mechanical rooms when I flipped through PDFs, so I went back to printing the plans and marking them with a red pencil. Has anyone else found that the software adds speed but takes away the kind of focus you get from physically touching the sheets?

A study I read last year said most people remember details better when they write things down by hand, and that matches exactly what you're describing with the red pencil. The tablet might be faster for sorting through everything, but it's too easy to skim past stuff when you're just swiping. Do you ever scan your marked-up paper sheets back into the system so your team has both versions?
