Hot take: my mechanic buddy in Reno spent 20 minutes debunking a flat earth video and it changed how I argue about conspiracies
Last week I was at my buddy Dave's shop off Wells Ave in Reno while he swapped my brake pads. He had a flat earth video playing on his phone and I asked why he even bothered watching it. He said he watches the other side on purpose, because the fastest way to spot a weak argument is to hear it out loud. Then he pulled up the actual claim from the video, which was that ships vanish bottom first over the horizon, and walked me through why that happens with a model of his kid's globe in like 4 minutes. I always figured debating conspiracies was about winning, but he made it about testing the claim itself. He said most people never read the source doc, they just repeat what a guy on YouTube said about it. Now I skip the 40 minute rant videos and go straight to the original report or study, and it takes half the time. If you argue with conspiracy folks online, do you ever actually read their source material first, or just react to the headline?
