I finally quit chasing 100 percent completion in big open world games and just beat the main story now
I used to force myself to fully clear every map icon before I would let myself move on, and it honestly made me stop playing games I liked. Back in 2019 I put in 85 hours on a single open world title just hunting collectibles, and I never even finished the last act because I got so burned out by the middle of the map. Now I play on a totally different rule. I follow the main path, do side stuff only if it looks fun in the moment, and when the credits roll I stop. Last month I beat two games in three weeks this way and actually remembered the stories, which never happened when I was grinding for trophies. A buddy on my friends list says I am wasting money by skipping content, and that is fair, but I would rather finish five games a year than stare at one map for six months. The thing nobody says out loud is that most of those extra icons are filler, and the studios know it. Does anyone here actually enjoy the collectible grind, or do you just feel like you have to do it?
Started doing the same thing maybe two years ago and it honestly saved gaming for me. My rule now is if a side quest doesn't hook me in the first couple minutes, I just move on and never think about it again, no guilt. The trick is to stop looking at the map as a to do list and start treating it like a menu, you pick what sounds good and skip the rest. My buddy keeps telling me to go back for the last few fast travel points in a game I beat in March, and I just tell him the credits already rolled, so we are done here. Try it for one game and you will see how fast that fear of missing out goes away.
