Had a perfect gaming week last March that I still think about

It was the week after my brother moved out of state and I was pretty down. Then I got a text from a friend in Chicago who I hadn't gamed with in like five years. He was on Xbox, I was on PlayStation, but we both grabbed Deep Rock Galactic since it had crossplay. We ended up playing four nights straight, like 9pm to midnight each time. One night my buddy's wife even brought us both snacks through the chat before she went to bed. I also squeezed in some Zelda Tears of the Kingdom on my Switch during lunch breaks that same week. It felt like the whole idea of consoles not mattering just clicked for me. Anyone else ever have a random week where everything came together like that?

Dismiss that whole idea because console exclusivity is still very much a thing and crossplay is a bandaid. You got lucky with one specific game that supports it, but most of the big multiplayer titles are still locked down to their own platforms. Plus the experience is never equal, PC players will always have an advantage with mouse and keyboard, and console aim assist is a joke in comparison. Your one good week doesnt change the reality that my friends and I still have to check what system everyone is on before we buy a game. And Nintendo basically lives in its own bubble, good luck getting crossplay with them on anything major.

You say crossplay is a "bandaid" but that's exactly what it is, a fix that works right now. I've got a buddy on PC and two on Xbox, and we've been Running Deep Rock and a few others for months without checking who owns what. Yeah, PC has the edge in shooters, but we play co-op games mostly anyway. And Nintendo is on their own island, sure, but that's their choice, not a rule for everyone else. The week that clicked for me was because I stopped caring about the platform war and just played with people I liked. Maybe the real issue is your friends are stuck on old habits, not the consoles.
