TIL adding a splash of water to my finish mix made the cream worse, not better
Everyone on the crew swears by a little water in the mix to stretch the cream, so I tried it on a 12x14 patio pour in Fresno last Thursday. I added maybe a quart per batch and the cream went from smooth to gritty with little lumps that wouldn't trowel out. I had to redo two sections because the surface dried chalky and showed every lap mark. Turns out the mix was already wet enough and I was just thinning the cement paste out of it. What's your go-to test for knowing when a mix is actually right without guessing?

Weren't we all taught that water stretches the mix, and didn't you just prove that's wrong?
