Pro tip: a kid on my crew asked why I still broom finish, and his reason actually made me stop and think
I was finishing a 40 by 60 garage slab out in Rio Rancho two weeks back and one of my helpers, 19 years old, asked me why I bother with a broom finish when "everyone just stamps everything now." I started to give him the usual answer about traction and code, but then he said his uncle pours in Phoenix and never brooms a thing. That got me wondering how much of what we do is just habit passed down. I've been finishing 15 years and I still keep a horsehair broom in the truck because my first foreman in Albuquerque would chew you out for a slick finish on a driveway. But honestly the kid had a point, half our jobs are stamped or exposed and the broom only comes out for the cheap stuff. I looked it up that night and code does call for a slip resistant finish on sloped driveways, so the old man wasn't wrong, he just never said why. Now I make sure the young guys know the reason behind it, not just the motion. Any of you still brooming everything out of habit, or have you switched up how you finish flatwork?
