Had to pick between a magnesium float and a wood float for a big garage slab last week. Went with the magnesium and the finish was way too slick.

Honestly, that sounds like a timing issue, not a tool issue. A magnesium float gives you a smooth finish, but you have to let the concrete set up more before you use it. If you float it too early, you bring too much cream to the surface and it gets slick. A wood float would have left it rougher, but the real fix is waiting longer before the final pass.

Yeah, the "bring too much cream to the surface" part is exactly right. I had the same slick finish once and waiting longer between passes, like ninas70 said, fixed it for me. A wood float is just more forgiving if your timing is off.
