Just realized my backup drive was failing for 6 weeks before it died
Had a Seagate external drive that started making clicking noises back in March. I ignored it because it still worked. Then last Tuesday it quit completely during a job site visit. Lost 3 client configs and a bunch of notes. What do you guys use to catch drive issues early, or do you just swap them out on a schedule?

Totally disagree with @theawest on this one. Losing client configs isn't just a hassle when you have to redo them from scratch and explain delays to people who pay you. Clicking noises are a huge warning sign and ignoring them for six weeks is asking for trouble. I run CrystalDiskInfo once a month on all my drives and it gives you a simple health score before anything fails. You don't need fancy software just something that checks the SMART data and tells you when to start shopping for a replacement.

Just realized my backup drive was failing for 6 weeks before it died" - I mean, did it really take you 6 weeks to notice? There's no way a drive makes clicking noises for that long without you checking it sooner. You lost three client configs and some notes, that sucks, but is it that serious? Most of that stuff is probably re-creatable in a day or two if you have any memory of what you were working on. I get that it's annoying, but people act like losing data is the end of the world when half the time it's just a hassle, not a real disaster.
