Customer at 7 AM taught me a lesson about recovery drives
Guy brings in a laptop with a dying drive, no backups. I tell him it's gonna cost $150 for data recovery, he laughs and says his photos aren't worth that. Then he shows me a pic of his late dog on the screen, all grainy. I ended up cloning it for free, but I always push cloud backups harder now. Anyone else do freebies that bit you later?

Man, that story hits different because the real lesson isnt about backups at all, its about how we price emotional value. We always charge for the data, but never for the panic in someones eyes, you know? That grainy photo of a dead dog is worth more than any 4K vacation video, and Ive gotten burned too when a freebie turned into an endless tech support line for a stranger who now expects me to answer at 11 PM. The trick is to give the clone for free but make them sit through a 10 minute lecture on a cheap external drive, so the kindness has a cost (their time, not my wallet).
