Rant: Spent $600 on a fancy network switch and it died in 8 months

Honestly, I thought I was smart buying a used Cisco 3750X off eBay for our small office. It worked great for a while, but one day it just stopped passing traffic on half the ports. Took it to a shop in Portland and they said the power supply was fried, no fix under $300. Has anyone else had luck with cheaper switches or should I just stick to new gear?

Did your buddy check if the power supply was actually the problem first? I had a friend who ran a small repair shop, and he told me about this one time a guy brought in a switch that was acting exactly like yours. Turned out it wasn't the power supply at all, it was a blown capacitor on the main board. He spent like 2 hours tracing it with a multimeter and fixed it with a 50 cent part from RadioShack. But the labor cost more than the switch was worth, so the guy just bought a new one anyway. Swapping a PSU without testing first is a crap shoot, especially on old Cisco gear where the real issue could be something else.

Why not just grab a new power supply for like $50 on eBay and swap it yourself?lol half the "dead" network gear I've fixed was just a bad PSU, especially on those older Cisco units.
