Pro tip: started labeling every cable run with a $2 tape roll, saved a client outage at 2am
Had a rough Tuesday at a client site in Reno. Their switch stack went down around 9pm and I was tracing cables by feel in a dark closet for 40 minutes. Turned out the uplink between floors 2 and 3 was mislabeled from a job done 2 years back. Now I bring a roll of colored electrical tape and tag both ends of every run the second I unbox it. Anyone else got a cheap trick that keeps their rack from turning into spaghetti?
Did you check the other end too or just the switch side? Tagging only one end is what bites you later, since the next guy pulls a run and now the label points to the wrong port. Do both ends the same day or the tape just makes the lie easier to trust.
