Rant: dropped $85 on a "rare" variant at the Dallas show and found it in the dollar bin two weeks later
I went to the comic con at the Dallas convention center two weeks ago and this vendor had a booth with a big RARE sign over a stack of books. He told me this variant was heating up and would be $200 by summer, so I paid $85 cash for it. Last Saturday I was at my local shop in Plano digging through their dollar bin and there it was, same issue, same cover, a buck. I checked the sold prices online and it's been selling for $3 to $5 for months, so the guy just made up a number. Has this happened to anyone else at a con, and do you have a go to way to check real prices on your phone before you hand over cash?
Got burned the exact same way at a show in Arlington last year. Guy had a wall book marked $60 and swore it was a first print that would double, and I paid it like a fool. Found the same book at Half Price Books a month later for $4 in way better shape. Now I look up sold listings on my phone right in front of the seller before I hand over anything, and if the signal is bad I just walk. The "heating up by summer" line is the oldest trick at these booths, it means nothing. Sorry that happened, but at least you're only out $85 and not more.
