Unpopular opinion: my $18 blade grinder beat my $150 burr grinder on one specific job
I used a burr grinder for 2 years and loved it, but I kept getting muddy cups with Ethiopian beans. Last month I pulled the old $18 blade grinder out of a drawer and gave it 8 short pulses instead of one long grind. My pour overs went from flat and muddy to clear and sweet in about a week of testing. The blade grinder gives me uneven chunks, and for some reason that uneven bed drains better in my V60. Has anyone else gone back to a cheap grinder for light roasts, or am I just getting lucky with one bag of beans?
Wait, 8 pulses? That's wild. I've been doing one long grind with my blade grinder this whole time and wondering why my light roasts taste like dirt water. The uneven chunks thing makes sense though, I never thought about how a mixed bed of big and small pieces would drain differently than a uniform one. Now I'm sitting here thinking about all the money I almost dropped on a burr grinder when maybe I just needed to press the button differently. Gonna try this tomorrow with my Yirgacheffe and see what happens.
