Three days in Portland and my pour over finally clicked

I was up in Portland last month visiting my sister and she has this fancy kettle with a gooseneck spout. I've been doing pour overs at home for like two years with a regular kettle and always got bitter cups. She showed me her routine, slow spiral pours, and I tried it with her setup for three mornings straight. By the third cup I could actually taste the sweetness instead of just burnt notes. Got home and ordered a cheap gooseneck kettle for $28 on sale, any recommendations for a good scale under $50 to pair with it?

That "slow spiral pours" part is exactly what did it for me too. Once I stopped just dumping water in the middle and actually worked the whole bed of grounds, everything changed. The bitterness you were getting is usually from channeling, where the water finds one easy path and over extracts that spot while ignoring the rest. Since you already know the technique now, any scale that does 0.1g readings will work fine, just make sure it has a timer built in so you can track your pour times without juggling your phone. The cheap ones on Amazon are honestly fine, just check the reviews for people complaining about drift after a few months.
