Vent: That phone call about spindle load made me second guess everything
Got a call from a buddy who runs a shop outside Cleveland last Tuesday. He said his Haas was throwing spindle load alarms at 60% on a simple contour pass. I told him to check his feed override, standard stuff. Then he said something that stuck with me: 'You check the coolant concentration yet? Water gets lazy when it gets old.' I laughed it off, but after I hung up I went and checked my own machine. My coolant was at 4% concentration, should be around 8%. Been running that way for 3 weeks. Load was creeping up about 8% on my finish passes and I just figured it was a dull insert. Swapped the coolant mix and my load dropped right back to normal. Why did it take his random comment for me to check the simplest thing first? Has anyone else had a basic maintenance issue hide behind a tooling problem for way too long?

Man, that's the whole game right there. Always the dumbest, most obvious thing that gets overlooked until someone else points it out. Like when my tire pressure light's been on for a month and I'm blaming the alignment until my wife says "did you check the air?
