Shoutout to the older guy at the trade show in Cleveland who showed me his trick for checking runout on a long bar

He pulled a dial indicator from his pocket, clamped it to the spindle, and said 'Kid, if you don't trust your tools, you're just guessing' before walking off, and now I check mine before every setup.

Reminds me of a foreman who used to carry a small machinist's square in his shirt pocket... he'd check setups with it and just tap the part twice if it was good. Never said a word. That quiet confidence in a basic tool always stuck with me more than any fancy digital readout.

Craig.parker has a point though, that silent tap sounds like a weird power move. Wouldn't a quick "looks good" be faster and clearer for everyone?
