PSA: I hit 0.0005 on a bearing bore first try and I'm still grinning about it
So Thursday was one of those days where nothing was supposed to go right. We had a rush job come in at 6am for 12 bearing bores on some 4140 blocks, tolerance was +0.0000/-0.0005, and our boring bar guy was out sick. I'm usually the mill guy but I got handed the lathe work and figured I'd scrap at least a few. First part came off the machine and I checked it with the bore gauge three times because I thought the needle was lying to me. Dead nuts on size, and the next 11 followed right behind it. What made it stand out was my lead walking by and just nodding without saying a word, which from him is basically a parade. We finished 40 minutes under the quoted time and the customer in Dayton called back asking if we could take more work like that. I still don't fully trust the setup for next time though, what do you guys do to keep a boring bar repeatable when you know a job is coming back?
