My neighbor laughed when I talked about swapping my lawn for native plants

I live outside of Denver and last spring I tore up my front yard grass to put in prairie flowers and shrubs. My neighbor Bill said I was nuts and that it would look like a weed patch by July. He told me to just keep the lawn and use a weed killer instead. Well after two months the plants took off and I had bees and butterflies all over. Bill's lawn was brown by August from the drought while mine stayed green with no extra water. I saved about $40 a month on my water bill compared to last year. Has anyone else had neighbors push back on climate friendly changes like this?

My buddy in Arizona did the exact same thing and his neighbor literally called the HOA on him. By August his yard was the only one not dead and the HOA actually asked him for plant recommendations. Bill will probably come around next summer when his water bill hits.

Are you kidding, this is exactly what happened to me too? I swapped to native grass last spring and my neighbor actually left me a passive-aggressive note about "weeds" but by July his lawn was crispy and mine was still green, haha.
