Just realized my 'green' lawn was a huge water waste

I was watering my Kentucky bluegrass for 20 minutes every morning in July, and my neighbor in Tucson asked me why I was trying to grow a swamp. That one comment made me look up how much water non-native grass really uses, and I felt pretty dumb. Has anyone else switched to a xeriscape or native plants and seen their water bill drop?

My uncle in Phoenix replaced his whole front yard with gravel and desert plants about five years back. He said his summer water use went from about 10,000 gallons a month down to maybe 1,500. It really hits home how much we waste just trying to keep up an image that doesn't fit where we live.

Yeah, switched to clover and some local grasses last year. The water bill basically got cut in half over the summer. It's crazy how much we were just pouring into the ground.

Totally, and it's wild how many things are like that. We keep doing stuff the old way just because it's what we know, even when it's a huge waste. Like watering a lawn that's not even from here, it's so much extra work and money for something that doesn't really belong. Makes you wonder what else we're all doing on autopilot that's just draining resources for no good reason.
