Hot take: someone on a Doom forum told me my map's lighting was 'flat as a pancake' and it took 2 weeks to fix
I had been lighting every room with the same 255 brightness for months, then he told me to drop it to 160 in corners and use 192 only near windows, so what's the one lighting tip you wish someone had slapped you with early on?
Dropping brightness in corners is smart but 160 with 192 near windows is a bit backwards. Windows should be the brightest thing in the room, that's where the light comes from. Corners get darker because light falls off as it travels, not because you just pick a lower number there. What you really want is to vary the light based on distance from the source, so a lamp at 224 fades down to maybe 96 in the far corner. Same idea with outdoor light hitting a window, it should spill brightest on the floor and walls right next to it, then fall off as you go deeper in. Also 255 flat everywhere is worse than people think, not just because it looks bad but because it kills depth and makes monsters and pickups hard to read against the walls.
