Vent: Switched to plastic brushes over wire and I'm never going back

Everyone in my local guild swears by wire brushes for heavy creosote but I got tired of gouging my flue liners. After 3 jobs with a poly brush set from Home Depot I actually got less drag and zero scratches. Anyone else make the swap and just deal with the side eye from old timers?

@fiona_scott44 is right about the grinding sound. I did the same thing last year and the poly brushes are way easier on the terra cotta. My clay liners had those hairline cracks starting from wire brush abuse. The poly sets from Home Depot work good enough for normal buildup. Just keep a wire brush for the really nasty stuff you see once a season. Works for me.

Gotta admit I was a wire brush loyalist for years until I finally tried a poly brush on a friends recommendation. The difference was night and day on my terra cotta liners, no more deep scratches or that horrible grinding sound. Now I keep a wire brush for the really caked on stuff but the poly does 90% of my work without damaging anything. The older guys in my area still give me looks too but I just show them the clean liners and they usually quiet down.
