Rotary brushes just throw sparks with heavy creosote" is exactly what happened to my buddy Mike last winter. He ran a brush up a rental house flue with about a quarter inch of glaze and had embers raining down the cleanout before he even finished. Made me glad I still stick to scraping when it's anything but a light dusting.
