My brand new Hobart mixer locked up during a Friday dinner rush and I had to hand-whip 12 quarts of cream

The motor just seized at 6:30 PM and the repair guy said it'll be three days for a new bearing, so now I'm looking at used mixers on Craigslist - has anyone had luck with those old Globe models?

Man, I feel your pain. I had a similar thing happen a few years back with a Hobart that just stopped mid-service on a Saturday. I ended up finding a used Globe from the 90s on a local restaurant supply auction site. Paid like 300 bucks for it and that thing has been a tank ever since, just needs a good cleaning once in a while and it keeps going.

That "good cleaning once in a while" part is underrated. My buddy Mike bought an old Berkel slicer from a diner that closed down. Thing worked great for about two months, then started grinding bad. He didn't clean the blade housing for who knows how long, just let grease build up. Finally took it apart with a toothbrush and degreaser, found a dried up gasket causing the noise. Twenty dollar fix. He almost junked it too. Really pays to dig into those older machines before you give up on them.
