Can we talk about over-stretching carpet until the seams split?

After fixing three jobs last month in Columbus where installers pulled the power stretcher too hard trying to hide wrinkles, I keep seeing the same split seams and it costs homeowners $200 extra in repairs, so why are we still treating more tension as the answer instead of using a knee kicker for the final 6 inches?
