Staining 40 year old fir trim in a 1920s Seattle foursquare, what am I doing wrong
I pulled the old shellac off the window casings in my dining room 3 weeks ago with denatured alcohol and steel wool, and the wood underneath is this gorgeous tight grain old growth fir. Problem is I tested a stain on a scrap piece from the closet and it came out blotchy as hell, real patchy look even after I wiped it back fast. A guy at the lumber yard in Ballard said old fir sometimes needs a wash coat of thinned shellac first to even out the soak, has anyone actually tried that or am I just wasting a step? I've done plenty of new pine trim but this old stuff acts totally different and I don't want to ruin 12 feet of irreplaceable casing. Would love to hear what has worked for you on old growth.

Wash coat all day, old fir drinks stain like a sponge without it.
