Had an old timer tell me my miters were off by a hair...

He pointed at a crown molding joint I was proud of and said 'that gap will show up after one summer of heat'. I switched from a speed square to a digital angle finder (like $40 at Home Depot) and my inside corners fit way tighter now. Any of you guys use a coping saw for inside corners instead of mitering?

You tried coping yet? Way easier than dialing in perfect miters on crown.

Man I gotta say coping is faster but I actually think the whole "coping vs miter" debate misses the real trick. The secret nobody talks about is that if you cut your crown with a slight backcut on the miter - like maybe 1-2 degrees extra - it closes up way tighter than perfect 45s ever will. That tiny bit of relief lets the joint pull together without gaps. I learned that from an old timer who did commercial work for 40 years and his mitered corners were always flawless. And he never bothered with coping unless the wall was super crooked. Coping's great for inside corners on baseboard but for crown I think people just overcomplicate it.
