Why does nobody talk about the 2-week notice trap in retail?

Last month I gave my two weeks at a grocery chain in Cleveland and they walked me out the same day. Three years ago I did the same thing at a warehouse job and they let me finish out the shift, no drama. I have friends in office jobs who get to work their notice and even get a goodbye party, but in hourly retail it feels like you're a thief the second you say you're leaving. Was I naive to think two weeks meant anything? I lost about $340 in pay that week because they cut me early, and the weird part is my next job didn't even care about a reference. Has anyone else gotten shown the door early after giving notice, or am I just picking the wrong kind of workplaces?
