Shoutout to the guy who told me to track my time for a week back in 2018

I thought it was pointless busywork until I saw on paper that a simple bathroom clean in a Denver suburb was taking me 90 minutes, not the 60 I'd been charging for. I adjusted my rates and my schedule, and my profit went up by almost 20% that quarter. Anyone else have a piece of simple advice they ignored that actually paid off?

Remember that old saying about measuring twice and cutting once? A buddy of mine who does carpentry work used to laugh at it. He finally tried it on a big deck job after messing up a costly piece of treated lumber. He found he was wasting about 15 minutes per board on re-cuts and extra trips. That one dumb rule he mocked for years now saves him a full day of labor on a large project.

Honestly that rule can SLOW you down if you're already good at what you do. Some guys get in a rhythm and double checking every single cut kills their flow. For a simple fence or something, eyeballing it and making a quick trim fix is faster than stopping to measure perfectly every time.
