My old manager told me to stop job hopping every 18 months

I used to think jumping jobs every year and a half was the only way to get raises. My manager at a marketing agency in Austin sat me down and said I was hurting my long term growth by never staying to see projects through. After three moves in four years I finally listened and stuck around for two full years. That stability got me promoted to lead and a 15% bump I never would have gotten bouncing around. Has anyone else found that staying put actually worked out better in the end?

Huh, that's an interesting take but I think there's a middle ground here. I mean, job hopping every 18 months does have downsides but it's not all bad. Sometimes you have to leave to get the raise, especially if your company is stingy with promotions. The 15% bump you got is nice, but I've seen people get 20-30% by moving every two years or so. Plus not every manager is as solid as yours was, you know? Stick around the wrong place too long and you're just stuck with a bad boss and no growth.

Oh man that's so true about bad bosses! lol. I had one once who would literally schedule 1-on-1s at 5pm on Fridays just to rant about his golf game for 45 minutes. Zero feedback, zero growth. I stayed way too long because I felt loyal or whatever and it totally killed my motivation. Learned that lesson the hard way, now I'm way quicker to bounce if the vibe is off.
