I always thought networking was just awkward small talk until a guy I met at a coffee shop in Cincinnati told me about a sous chef opening.

Ever notice how the best connections happen when you're not even trying? I was buying a used bike off some guy last year and we just started talking about local trails. Next thing I know, he's texting me about a volunteer trail building crew that needed extra hands. It wasn't a job, but it led to meeting people who actually did hire me later. Forced networking events feel like a bad play, but a real chat at a coffee shop or a garage sale can actually work.

So you're saying I should just hang out in parking lots waiting for people to sell bikes? Because my last forced networking event felt like speed dating for people who hate talking. That used bike guy probably just wanted to make sure you weren't a weirdo before he gave you his number, which is a better check than any elevator pitch. It's like the universe only hands out real opportunities when you stop looking for them. Maybe we should all just give up and join a bowling league.
