Overheard a guy at REI say something about sleeping pads that got me thinking

I was in the sleeping bag aisle last Saturday and heard a guy tell his friend that inflatable pads are basically just fancy air mattresses and not worth the money. He was saying foam pads are just as good and way cheaper. But has anyone actually compared comfort on a 3-night trip where temps drop below 40 degrees?

Start by saying it kinda depends what you mean by "just as good". I've slept on both types a bunch of times in weather right around freezing. Foam pads definitely keep you warm off the ground but after three nights my hips and shoulders start to ache from the lack of give. Inflatables are heavier and more of a hassle but for comfort alone I'd take the extra couple ounces every time if I'm actually trying to sleep good.

Yeah @ryan_carr59, I switched to inflatable for the same reason and it fixed my back pain totally.
