My cheap rain fly outlasted my expensive one in a 3 day downpour

Took my $40 generic tarp fly to the Smokies while my buddy had a name brand one that was 4 times the price, and his started leaking at the seams on day two while mine stayed dry the whole time. The cheap one had those taped seams done right and the expensive one clearly cut corners on assembly. Anyone else find that paying more for gear sometimes just buys you a logo?
