I stopped hauling my old 8 pound Coleman stove and switched to a tiny canister burner for solo trips
For about 6 years I lugged a green Coleman two burner on every trip, even when it was just me and a sleeping bag, because I figured more stove meant more reliability. A guy at a campsite near Flagstaff let me try his little canister stove last June and my whole pack dropped 5 pounds, plus it boiled water just as fast. Now I want to know, does anyone here actually regret going smaller, or did the tiny stoves hold up for you on longer trips?
Read a trip report from a guy who did the whole Colorado Trail with a pocket rocket and one small canister. He said the only real issue was cold mornings, since isobutane gets lazy when it drops near freezing. He ended up sleeping with the canister in his bag to keep it warm. That sold me on the small setup for 3 season trips, but for real winter stuff I would still want something that runs on white gas.
